Canadian Citizenship for Adopted Children Born Outside Canada

Canadian Citizenship for Adopted Children Born Outside Canada

If your child was born outside Canada and has been legally adopted by a Canadian citizen, you may be eligible to apply for Canadian citizenship for your adopted child.

Who Can Pass On Canadian Citizenship?

Adoptive parents may pass on Canadian citizenship to an adopted child if at least one adoptive parent:

  • Was born in Canada, or

  • Was a naturalized Canadian citizen at the time the adoption was finalized.

Once granted, a Canadian Citizenship Certificate allows your child to live, study, and work in Canada without the need for a visa or permit.

The Canadian Citizenship Process for an Adopted Child

Applying for Canadian citizenship for an adopted child generally involves two key stages:

1. Confirmation of the Adoptive Parent’s Canadian Citizenship

This step confirms that at least one adoptive parent was a Canadian citizen at the time of the adoption.

2. Citizenship Application for the Adopted Child

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) assesses whether the adopted child qualifies for a direct grant of Canadian citizenship under Section 5.1 of the Citizenship Act.
